Greensleeves Children's Trust East London

Greensleeves children’s trust was started some 18 years ago by Di and Ian Lehy. They never planned to open a Children’s home – it was planned for them! Gradually the local community heard about what Di and Ian were doing and that they were happy to help children who needed a place of safety, and so the numbers grew and so too did their vision.

East London Child & Youth Centre

The East London Child and Youth Care Centre (ELCYC) has a long and proud history in East London. In existence since 1924, emphasis was placed on custodial care in the early years, focusing on feeding, clothing, educating and housing war orphans. The services of the ELCYCC have developed from purely residential care programmes to include community-based programmes focusing on prevention and early intervention. This approach is premised on the belief that a child should only be institutionalised as a last resort, and the emphasis is on keeping the child in his/her own environment for as long as possible.

Gods Heart Desire Youth Walk in Centre

Jonas opened her heart and tiny shack to abandoned and orphaned children. “I treat them as my own children and I love them as my own,” said Jonas. She even quit her day job to look after the children going door to door in East London asking for donations. In 2009 she finally knocked on the right doors when two local business owners heeded her plea. Catherine Gray of Gray Burmeister Incorporated in East London and Barry Moldenhauer of Build-it hardware store in Fort Jackson offered to help her. With the help of the two, Jonas was able to secure land on premises leased for Moldenhauer’s business. A trust was formed which raised money and donated material for the prefab housing structure.

The Kings Children's Home East London District

The Kings Children’s Home is a safe house for babies and young children that have been abandoned or abused. Babies who come to The King’s Children’s Home have been found dumped in bushes, in black bags on the side of the road, left in government hospitals, left on doorsteps or sometimes handed in by family members who are not able to care for them. Many of the children are from prostitutes, or have been affected by drugs, alcohol abuse or poverty. Social workers or police who find the children bring them to The King’s Children’s Home, which provides a secure, safe and loving environment while their cases are investigated.
